China lane is a 150 seat asian restaurant and bar with a private dining room, and is located in angel place underneath the birdcage installation called forgotten songs*. it is the third restaurant for the china doll team. Our concept for the project was to create an asian ambience that would draw on contemporary pop culture references rather than fall into a thematic, all-too-familiar, asian aesthetic. We spent a lot of time watching kung-fu and were also drawn to the wong kar-wai’s futuristic chinese-language film ’2046’ as a key influence, based in-part on it’s reinterpretation of 1950’s styling with a strong emphasis on colour and the use of neon. The restaurant features vintage restored parker chairs, aged leather banquettes and a gloss japan black floor and has been featured in daily addict, indesign live and timeout magazine
